Liposuction will not “make” someone lose weight. However, it can enable some people to lose more fat and less muscle than they normally would by themselves because liposuction tends to take more of the fat in a patient’s folds of skin and stomach for example. On average, most patients see between 7 – 15% reduction in their total body fat after surgery without or with very nutritious post-op dieting.

Liposuction is the removal of excess lipids from deep beneath the skin. In other words, liposuction does not actually remove fat, it simply removes cells that create fat stored above and below the muscle.

Lipid deposits are constantly being replenished by dietary intake and insulin levels are what signals these fat cells to store more energy for use in times of famine. To remove this storage permanently requires different strategies: diet, exercise, weight loss surgery or drugs; however there is no current method to specifically target localized deposits of fat without removing other tissues as well. The best approach to reduce those problem areas remains a decrease in total adiposity (or body size) rather than any single surgical procedure alone.
